It’s more important than ever for youth in our community to have access to robust mental health support. Foundry Langley promises to be an amazing resource for families when they need it most.

An urgent need in our community

Youth today face unique challenges: they’re growing up during a time of unprecedented upheaval, where change is the only constant. They’re navigating pressures and responsibilities at home, at school and among friends—and facing big questions about their futures. And while it’s true that youth are resilient, they face higher rates of mental illness and substance use than any other demographic. One in five young people will experience mental health or substance use challenges, but less than a quarter of those in need will get help. Many children and adolescents want to access mental health supports and services, but they often don’t know where to begin or become frustrated by red tape.

A fresh approach to mental health care

Foundry Langley believes that there is a better way to provide reliable mental health services to the youth in our community—and they are working to ensure that no one has to suffer alone. Acting as an entry point for Langley’s existing services, Foundry will help children and families find the help they need in the moment. They work to fill gaps in the system, and their services and facilities are designed from the ground up to better serve youth.

A dedicated advisory group of youth from the community is providing insights and ideas—and helping Foundry create a space that makes young people feel comfortable and supported from the second they arrive. These youth advisors have offered input on design details large and small, and their feedback has been invaluable. When visitors arrive at Foundry Langley, they will be greeted by a reception area that feels bright, with touches of wood and a distinctive Langley influence. Youth and families will also have access to two secondary waiting areas and various nooks where they can find some privacy when they wish.

“Youth are saying they are really looking forward to finding services that are easily accessible, where they won’t be on a waitlist for months and where they can find all of the services in one centre,” says Jennifer Kawin, Youth Advisory Group moderator for Encompass Support Services Society. “They want a place you can walk in, be yourself and feel like you belong.”

Supporting a critical cause together

A true community resource, Foundry Langley will offer a variety of services, including access to medical care, sexual and mental health supports, peer counselling and opportunities to develop life skills. While the organization is primarily focused on youth services, they also strive to be a resource for anyone in search of help.

At Heart & Soul, we work hard to support the communities where we live and work. We believe there is nothing more valuable than investing in our youth, and we’re thrilled to be supporting such an important cause with a $150,000 donation. “Mental Health struggles for youth have been on the rise, especially during the pandemic,” says Petra Bontkes, Executive Director at Heart & Soul. “Currently, it is extremely challenging, if not almost impossible, for our youth in crisis to access the services they need. Foundry Langley will not only provide those much-needed services, but they will also provide it all under one roof.”
